Get incredibly close to the towering eastern face of Mt. Kanchenjunga, traversing the pristine rhododendron forests and high-altitude lakes of the Sikkim Himalayas.
The Goechala trek is arguably the grandest trek in the Indian Himalayas, often compared to the legendary trails of Nepal. It offers the closest possible view of Mt. Kanchenjunga (the third-highest peak in the world) without actually mounting a summit expedition.
Located deep within the Kanchenjunga National Park, the trail is incredibly diverse. You will hike through thick, mystical forests of oak and rhododendron, cross the thundering Prek Chu river, and traverse the vast, high-altitude meadows of Dzongri. The final push takes you past the sacred, crystal-clear Samiti Lake before reaching the Goechala viewpoint, where the massive eastern wall of Kanchenjunga towers directly overhead.
Given the long duration and high altitude (over 15,000 ft), this is a demanding trek. Trekkers must provide proof of running 10km in under 65 minutes 15 days prior to the departure date. Previous high-altitude trekking experience is strictly required.
A meticulously designed 10-day itinerary built to optimize acclimatization before the final high-altitude push.
Meet our pickup team at NJP Railway Station or Bagdogra Airport. We drive through the lush tea gardens of West Bengal into the steep valleys of Sikkim. We reach Yuksom, the historical first capital of Sikkim, by evening to check into our guesthouse.
A critical acclimatization day. The trail climbs steeply through a dense forest of vibrant rhododendrons (which bloom beautifully in spring). As you clear the tree line, the vast, open meadows of Dzongri appear, offering your first panoramic views of the Kanchenjunga range.
We descend from Dzongri down to the Prek Chu river, crossing it before ascending again through the beautiful Prek Chu valley. The landscape becomes rugged and rocky as we reach the high-altitude campsites of Thansing and eventually Lamuney, preparing for the summit push.
We start the hike at 3:00 AM under the stars. The trail takes us past the sacred, frozen Samiti Lake. We ascend a steep moraine ridge to reach the first Goechala viewpoint just as the sun rises, illuminating the massive face of Mt. Kanchenjunga directly ahead. After taking in the views, we begin the long descent back to Lamuney and Thansing.
