A dramatic crossover from the lush, green Kullu valley to the stark, barren landscapes of Lahaul. Experience two entirely different Himalayan worlds in one expedition.
The Hampta Pass trek is renowned for the sheer contrast in landscapes it offers. Starting in the fertile Kullu valley, characterized by dense forests of pine and maple, the trail abruptly changes as you cross the pass at 14,100 feet.
On the other side lies the stark, mesmerizing cold desert of Lahaul. This dramatic crossover is unparalleled in the Indian Himalayas. The journey culminates with a drive to the stunning, moon-shaped Chandratal Lake, making it one of the most visually rewarding treks for adventurers seeking varying terrains.
To ensure baseline physiological safety at 14,000+ feet, all trekkers must provide proof of running 5km in under 35 minutes 15 days prior to the departure date. Failure to meet this may result in offboarding at the base camp.
A meticulously designed itinerary built to optimize acclimatization and visual reward.
The journey begins with a beautiful drive from Manali to Jobra. From Jobra, a short, easy trek through mixed forests of pine, green maple, and birch trees leads you to the lush green campsite of Chika, situated alongside the Rani Nallah river.
Today the landscape begins to transition. You will cross the river and gradually ascend beyond the tree line into alpine meadows. Balu Ka Ghera (mound of sand) is a flat ground beside the river, offering a peaceful campsite before the pass crossing.
The most challenging and rewarding day. You ascend steeply to Hampta Pass at 14,100 ft. At the top, the lush Kullu valley lies behind you, while the stark, barren mountains of Lahaul stretch out ahead. The descent to Shea Goru is steep and requires careful navigation.
An early morning icy river crossing sets the tone for the day. You then descend to the road head at Chatru. From Chatru, depending on road conditions, we drive to the breathtaking, high-altitude Chandratal Lake before returning to camp.
